Cultural diversity and biodiversity are relevant threats to many countries today and are connected topics. Some threats to biodiversity are pollution, change of climate, and degradation of habitat. Pollution and a change of habitat harm the plant and animal species in effected areas. This, in turn, harms cultural diversity as it effects people’s traditions and styles of living. For example, many people traditionally catch and grow their own food. However, pollution can intoxicate a river and kill the fish. The people who rely on the fish are then forced to move or change their diets. Another example is that people are clearing out land to make buildings. This harms the biodiversity by killing the plants and animals that live there. This also, in general, makes the area a more modern place to live. Importing goods and modernizing ways of living collectively make for a less culturally diverse society.
I believe that the government should be involved in preserving cultural diversity. Cultural diversity plays a big roll in the history of a country. Therefore, I think that the government should work to protect historical landmarks, artifacts, buildings, etc. It is important to preserve people’s traditions, beliefs, cuisines, etc. in order to make for an open minded and accepting world.
On the other hand, it can be argued that the government should not be involved in protecting cultural diversity. The majority of the people today are moving towards a modern society, and the government should not try to prevent this progress towards the future. Instead, time and money should be spent towards other issues in the world, such as hunger and illness. Cultural diversity was relevant in the past and should not be preserved. I do not believe this to be the case. Rather, I think that cultural diversity is what makes people and places unique. Culture plays a role in peoples points of view and opinions. Without cultural diversity, we would live in a very one-dimensional world.
